When the answer becomes the groove: Art Blakey’s “Moanin’” at KD Sound

A blues phrase becomes a conversation

“Moanin’” begins with Bobby Timmons at the piano, but it does not remain a solitary statement. The horns answer his phrase and the rhythm section turns the exchange into motion. Listen to how each return feels familiar without becoming static: the call establishes the shape, the answer enlarges it, and Art Blakey keeps the whole band leaning into the next bar.¹

That structure gives the track its welcoming force. A listener can enter through the memorable theme, then follow the personalities inside it: Lee Morgan’s trumpet and Benny Golson’s tenor sharing the front line, Timmons renewing the gospel-inflected figure, Jymie Merritt holding the bass foundation, and Blakey making ensemble punctuation feel physical and communal.¹

Blue Note identifies Timmons as the composer and the 1958 quintet as Blakey, Morgan, Golson, Timmons and Merritt. HFI used a 192 kHz/24-bit edition of the album for this session.¹

Listen for whether the exchange among the instruments stays clear and connected. Göbel says the Divin Noblesse combines a waveguided AMT tweeter, a bending-wave midrange section and two twelve-inch bass drivers per loudspeaker. In this session, follow the theme from piano to horns, then hear whether the cymbals, bass pulse and Blakey’s accents still belong to the same groove.²

The playback chain used CH Precision X1 external power supply, T1 10 MHz time reference, C10 digital-to-analog converter, L1 line stage and M1.1 power amplifiers before the Göbel Divin Noblesse loudspeakers.

HFI recorded with DPA-4011 microphones and a Zoom F8n Pro at 192 kHz/32-bit float on 4 March 2025 at KD Sound. The monitoring record names Kennerton Audio Rognir Bog Oak headphones with an Audience frontRow headphone cable.

Begin at a comfortable headphone level and listen once for the full arc before isolating details. On a second pass, stay with the piano call, the horn response and the bass-and-drum support beneath them. The point is not to award each sound a separate score, but to hear whether five musicians keep turning a compact idea into shared momentum.¹²
