The riff that will not let go: Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” at KD Sound

A riff built to keep moving

“Paranoid” wastes no time establishing its terms. The guitar riff arrives as both hook and engine, returning beneath Ozzy Osbourne’s vocal while bass and drums keep the song pressing forward. Its compact scale is part of the force: ideas enter, strike and move on before the momentum can loosen.

Listen first to the riff as a fixed point, then to everything that changes around it. Drum accents sharpen an entrance, the vocal leans across the pulse, and short openings give the guitar room before the band closes ranks again. Repetition does not flatten the performance; it makes every small change carry more weight.

HFI used “Paranoid” from Attention! Black Sabbath Volume One, issued by WWA Records as WWA 100 in May 1975. The approved master credits Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi as writers, with Black Sabbath performing.

One analog chain, clearly divided roles

The playback chain used an Esoteric Grandioso T1 turntable with a Grandioso G1X master clock generator. A Grandioso E1 balanced phono-stage preamplifier fed a C1X line-stage preamplifier, followed by Grandioso M1X monoblock power amplifiers and Göbel Divin Comtesse loudspeakers.

That sequence makes the responsibilities easy to follow: the T1 reads the record, the E1 provides the phono stage, the C1X controls the line-level signal, and the M1X pair supplies separate amplification for the two loudspeakers. It is a system angle grounded in the session record, not a claim that any one component caused a particular sound.

Take the sweet spot at KD Sound

HFI recorded the system at KD Sound in Seoul on 18 May 2025. DPA-4011 microphones fed a Zoom F8n Pro at 192 kHz/32-bit float, and Kennerton Audio Rognir Bog Oak headphones with an Audience frontRow cable were used during production.

Start at a comfortable headphone level and follow the centre of the riff. Then widen your attention to the kick, snare and bass, noticing when they reinforce the guitar and when they pull against it. On a second pass, stay with the vocal phrasing while the band keeps moving underneath. Sit in the sweet spot and let the song’s economy do the work.
