A band shaped between Nassau and Muscle Shoals
“Lady Writer” appears midway through Communiqué, the second Dire Straits album. The band’s official record credits Mark Knopfler as the song’s writer and lead guitarist, with David Knopfler on rhythm guitar, John Illsley on bass and Pick Withers on drums. Barry Beckett co-produced the album with Jerry Wexler and also played keyboards under the name B. Bear.1
The album was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau in December 1978 and mixed at Muscle Shoals the following month. Hear the track as a band performance assembled from clearly differentiated roles: follow the lead-guitar phrases, then return to the rhythm guitar, bass, drums and keyboards that keep the song moving beneath them.
A vinyl source before the familiar downstream chain
A Linn Sondek LP12 with Ekos SE tonearm, Kandid cartridge and Radikal motor control played the Warner Bros. HS 3330 LP. A McIntosh C12000 preamplifier fed MC3500 Mk II monoblocks and Sonus faber Stradivari G2 loudspeakers, with AudioQuest cabling.
The C12000, MC3500 Mk II and Stradivari G2 have appeared together in an earlier ROYCO session, where the article focused on selectable analogue stages in the digital source and preamplifier. Here the genuinely new system question begins at the record: Linn identifies Radikal as the LP12’s motor control and power supply, with Ekos SE carrying the cartridge. The source architecture changes before the familiar downstream components take over.2
Follow the groove through the band
On the first pass, keep Mark Knopfler’s vocal and lead guitar together as one line of attention. On the second, move to Pick Withers’ drums and John Illsley’s bass, then notice how David Knopfler’s rhythm guitar and Beckett’s keyboards fill the space without taking over the song.
That change of focus is more revealing than a list of hi-fi adjectives. It tests whether each musical role remains legible while the group maintains a single pulse. The LP is the physical starting point, but the reason to stay is the band’s economy and forward motion.
Captured at ROYCO
HFI recorded the playback at ROYCO on 4 November 2025 using a matched pair of DPA-4011 microphones, a Zoom F8n Pro and Vertere microphone cables at 192 kHz/32-bit float.
The pair’s distances from the loudspeakers were matched with a laser distance meter at the position that best represented the sweet-spot sound. With headphones on, let the opening establish the room, then follow whichever band member draws you back into the groove.
