A carol built on two kinds of motion
Dan Forrest describes the arrangement through a clear contrast: long, sustained choral lines gather momentum over a more articulated accompaniment. BYU’s album credits name its Combined Choirs and Philharmonic Orchestra for this performance. Listen to the choir’s long breath above the orchestral pulse and to the way both draw the familiar carol toward its close.12
HFI used the BYU Records album Celebration of Christmas: Holy Night, released on 2 December 2016, at 44.1 kHz/16-bit. The release credits John Francis Wade as writer, Dan Forrest as arranger, and the BYU Choir with the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra as performers.
A shared Halcro design lineage
A Laufer Teknik Memory Player MP-32 fed an MSB Technology Cascade DAC. The analog path continued through a Halcro Equinox preamplifier and Eclipse mono power amplifiers to Kharma Enigma Veyron 4D loudspeakers.
Halcro says the Equinox active gain stages use a topology developed for the input stage of the Eclipse power amplifier. That circuit connection links the preamplifier and monoblocks more closely than their shared name alone.34
Capturing the sweet spot at SELekt
HFI recorded the session at SELekt on 25 June 2026. The DPA-4011 pair was positioned precisely to capture the sweet-spot sound, with a laser distance meter used to set the microphones’ distance from the loudspeakers. The microphones fed a Zoom F8n Pro at 192 kHz/32-bit float, and Sennheiser HD820 headphones were used during production.
With headphones at a comfortable level, begin by finding the front edge of the choir and the orchestral field behind or around it. Then let your attention move with the music instead of trying to inspect every section at once.
From invitation to arrival
On the first pass, follow the choir’s legato span all the way through a phrase. On the next, listen underneath it for marcato figures and the extra articulation they bring to the approach toward the ending. Together, sustained and marked motion carry the carol toward its close.
A well-known carol can still reward fresh attention when its arrangement makes familiar words travel by a new route. Sit in the sweet spot with headphones, keep the human breath at the centre, and hear how the BYU forces turn an invitation to gather into a shared arrival.
