A conversation carried into concert

Some songs bring us into a conversation already under way. In Woman of Heart and Mind, Joni Mitchell addresses another person directly: affection and respect matter alongside the attraction between them. Praise can coexist with frustration, and the wish to care for someone can survive disappointment. Those changing demands give the conversation its movement.

Mitchell wrote and performed the song, which appeared on For the Roses in 1972. Two years later it became part of Miles of Aisles, released by Asylum Records in November 1974. That live recording is the source for this HiFi Immersion session at SELekt.

A place among the songs

On Miles of Aisles, Woman of Heart and Mind is the seventh track, following Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire and preceding A Case of You. Returning to that sequence gives the song another setting within a longer programme of Mitchell's work.

The system at SELekt

HFI played a 44.1 kHz/16-bit file from Miles of Aisles. A Laufer Teknik The Memory Player MP-32 fed an MSB Technology The Cascade DAC. The analogue path continued through a Halcro Equinox preamplifier and Eclipse Mono power amplifiers to Kharma Enigma Veyron 4D loudspeakers.

Inside the Eclipse Mono, the amplifier and power-supply boards use different layer counts. Halcro specifies six-layer PCBs for the power amplifier and four-layer PCBs for the power supply.1

A sweet-spot perspective

HiFi Immersion recorded the session at SELekt on 25 June 2026. A matched pair of DPA-4011 microphones was positioned to capture the sound of the sweet spot, with speaker distances matched using a laser distance meter. The Zoom F8n Pro captured the signal at 192 kHz/32-bit float, with Sennheiser HD820 headphones used during the recording work.

Settle into your own sweet spot with headphones and spend a few minutes with Mitchell's Woman of Heart and Mind.
