A film theme that carries its own narrative
Vangelis composed and performed Chariots of Fire without a sung narrator. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences identifies him as the winner for the film’s Original Score, placing this familiar title piece inside a score written to carry story through instrumental sound.
HFI used a 44.1 kHz/16-bit edition of the 1981 Polydor album Chariots of Fire.
Follow motion before scale
Take the first pass without assigning a scene or a verdict to every sound. With no vocal line to direct attention, the title theme itself becomes the guide. Notice when the music feels intimate and when it opens outward, while keeping the central instrumental identity in view.
On a second pass, listen for continuity rather than spectacle. The useful question is whether the theme’s sense of forward movement remains easy to follow as its weight and scale change. The recording presents that relationship; the judgment stays with the listener.
A different question for the familiar Sohgom system
Two Antipodes Audio Oladras fed a Rockna Wavedream Reference DAC. A Riviera APL01 Special Edition preamplifier and AFM100 Special Edition monoblocks drove Klinger Favre Audio STUDIO 20 loudspeakers.
Riviera describes the APL01 Special Edition as an all-tube Class A line stage with zero feedback. Its balanced inputs and outputs use transformers, giving this session a system question centred on the preamplifier’s documented signal path.
Return from the circuit description to the title theme. Follow the music from its smaller gestures into its broader scale, and decide how well the complete system keeps that motion coherent.
Sohgom from one microphone-specific perspective
HFI recorded the system at Sohgom on 16 December 2025. The matched DPA-4011 pair was positioned where those microphones most closely captured the sound heard at the sweet spot, and a laser distance meter matched their distances from the loudspeakers. Vertere microphone cables connected the pair to a Zoom F8n Pro, which captured the session at 192 kHz/32-bit float.
Use headphones at a comfortable level and take a sweet spot of your own. Let Vangelis’s theme set the pace, then follow how the music carries its story without words.
